When Should You Hire a Web Designer?
A web presence is a hugely important thing for a business, but it doesn’t have to be sparkly and professionally designed from the start. I have something to say this week that may seem odd, coming from a web designer. It may go against popular belief in the business world, but occasionally I like to rebel a little.
Contrary to what is popular advice in many areas of the Internet, a business owner absolutely does not need a professionally designed website from the start. When you’re just starting out, you don’t need a website with all the bells and whistles. That’s a huge financial investment, and I believe there are better ways to spend your money (or actually not spend it at all and keep it for yourself!)
There is a right time to go all out with a professionally designed website. That is not when your business has no income. If you’re just starting out, all you need is a domain name, hosting, a WordPress install and a good theme that can make it work for the first year. You can get started for less than $200.
But eventually, you’ll need more. Here’s how you know it’s the right time to go all out with your website.
7 Ways You Know It’s Time to Invest In a Professional Web Designer
- You’ve Been in Business For Some Time and You Know Your Brand.
At City Girl’s Design, my philosophy is that you should take some time to build your business before you jump in with that kind of expense. At the start, you may not know exactly what you want. It’s not unusual for a business to refine itself over the first few years. You need to experiment with your business, play with the platform and get more familiar with it.
- You Can Afford the Expense.
At the start, running a business may feel like you’re hemorrhaging money. You shouldn’t spend thousands of dollars on a professionally designed website if you can’t afford it. I believe you shouldn’t have to accumulate debt to have a web presence that is functional. You don’t always have to spend money to make money.
- You Know the Cost of a Designer is Not Going to Use Up Your Profits.
If you’re making a constant stream of money and you’re ready to level up, a designer can help you take your business to the next level. When the cost of the designer is less than the money you can make if you took the DIY route for your website, you know it’s time.
- You Feel Like Giving Your Website a Boost Could Bring More of Your Ideal Clients.
If your website isn’t converting visitors to buyers, or visitors to newsletter subscribers, then you may have an issue that a designer could help you fix. It could be an issue with how your site is laid out, it could be that a different color scheme could help you. A designer can take a look at your site and identify small tweaks that could make a huge difference.
- You Have your Content Nailed Down.
While it’s possible to create a website without the content, that’s a piece that certainly makes it easier to ensure that the website looks good and works well. The amount of text on each page, as well as the type of content on each page, is an issue that can affect the way your page is designed. It also helps you to have an idea of what your site will look like when it is complete and goes live.
- You Need More Than a Standard WordPress Theme.
If your business has evolved to the point where you’re adding an e-commerce store or creating a membership site, your best bet may be to take the plunge and hire a designer. These kinds of customizations can be complicated and can be easy to make a mistake with if you don’t know what you’re doing.
- You Fully Understand that a Custom Website Takes Time and You’re Okay With That.
It takes a little time to get a fabulous looking custom website. When your business is steady enough that you’re confident you can put up a coming soon landing page or continue to use your current site while the new is being designed and still have consistent work, that is a sign that you could handle the time it takes to get a custom website.
If you’re ready to get a website that is as awesome as you are and you want to hand the design off to a pro so you can focus on running your business, that’s what CityGirl’s Design is here for! Reach out if you think you’re ready to work with me!
