If you run a service-based business, one of the most important things is to find the right client. Yeah, you can work with anybody who contacts you, but chances are you’ll burn yourself out in the process.
Working with anybody doesn’t work. You need to set boundaries and know exactly which type of clients you want to take on.
And if you hate rejecting people, let your website do the job! (or part of it, anyways…)
Use the tips below and you’ll be able to both attract the right customers as well as weed out the ones you don’t want to work with!
Add a friendly picture of you on your homepage
People buy from people, so if you want your ideal clients to relate to you, it’s always good to show your trustworthy face on your website! And you don’t need professional pictures done either! Ask a friend or set a time and just smile. That’ll do the trick!
Make sure your brand reflects who you are
If you’re all kinds of funky and want to work with funky clients, your website needs to be funky! Your branding will definitely play the biggest role in getting the clients that you actually want. Make sure that it represents you well and what you stand for. That way you’ll make sure the people that are attracted by your brand will be super easy to work with!
And for the same reasons, people who you’re not supposed to work with won’t contact you, because they won’t connect with your brand as much.
Add your prices to your website
This is such an easy one for me, but I know it’s not for everyone! I don’t have a problem talking about money and asking for it, so I love having my pricing on my website. That way, when someone contacts me for my web design services, they already know what the base price for a website is. If they have a lower budget, they just won’t email me.
It’s an easy way to weed out the people who don’t have the money to hire you! No more getting excited over a potential new client only to learn their budget is half what your prices are. Instead, you’ll just never hear from that person and spend your energy finding better, paying clients!
Add your values to your “Work with Me” page
You don’t do discounts? Say it on your website! You only work from 10AM till 3PM? Show that somewhere! Yes, you’ll repel potential clients by saying that. But you know what? That’s what you want!
Stop fighting with clients who aren’t right for you by letting them know exactly how you work! If you have it on your website, then every potential client will have to agree to those terms before hiring you.
If they don’t have a problem with them? Awesome, you guys are going to get along very well!
And if it annoys them that you don’t work until 9PM every day? Well, that’s their problem and they can hire someone else while you enjoy your cozy evening and go to your favorite Zumba class!
If you’re just getting started in business, you might not even know who you are and what you want, which makes it hard to get your branding right or figuring out what your values are, but don’t worry! Go with what feels right at the moment, and feel free to change anything along the way!
After all, you’re the boss! 😉
